What to look for when buying preloved clothing online
Buying clothing online can be daunting, particularly when you cannot touch and feel the fabric and try on the garment for size. When shopping for preloved clothing, there is also the challenge of ensuring that the garment you buy will be as described and if it will arrive. So that you don’t miss out on the joy of shopping for excellent quality preloved clothing online, we have a few tips to ensure you know what to look for.
1. Is there a detailed description of the item?
To ensure you know what you are buying, look for the following information in the garment description:
- Clothing brand name
- Measurements - including bust, waist, hips, length
- Clothing size (as per the brand label)
- Materials used to make the garment, e.g., cotton, silk
- Clear images of the garment so that you can zoom in and see the detail
To ensure the best fit, it is essential to check the clothing measurements. You can no longer rely on clothing size as some brands sizes can vary dramatically, thanks to vanity sizing.
Reloved Wardrobe records the measurements using a tape measure with the garment laid flat. To ensure the best fit, measure some of your favourite clothes laid flat as a benchmark.
2. What condition is the clothing?
Not all preloved clothing is in perfect condition. There might be some slight wear and tear; if this is the case, this should be noted in the garment’s description.
You will also want to confirm that the garment is devoid of any stains, tears, and odours. From my previous experience it can be very hit and miss when buying preloved clothing online – particularly when there are no guarantees or returns. I purchased a beautiful Zimmermann dress on facebook marketplace and later discovered it had a stain that could not be removed. The seller had confirmed the dress had been cleaned and was in great condition, unfortunately this was not the case.
Reloved Wardrobe uses two classifications to describe their preloved clothing:
- New with tags – these are clothes that still have the clothing tags intact and are unlikely to have been worn
- Preloved – these clothes have been worn and are in like-new condition. We do a thorough inspection to ensure no stains, tears, or odours and that the garment has been cleaned since it was worn last.
3. Do they have a return policy?
When you purchase preloved clothing from an individual on an online shopping site such as Facebook marketplace, they will unlikely offer returns if you are unhappy with the purchase.
To eliminate the risk of the garment not being to your liking or not fitting, look for online preloved clothing stores that offer a return policy. Most stores will offer returns within a specified period. However, it is unlikely shipping costs will be refunded unless there is a fault with the garment that was not highlighted at the time of purchase.
Reloved Wardrobe’s returns policy allows you to return items that don’t fit or meet your requirements within ten days of delivery. See our return policy here.
4. Do they offer a range of safe payment options?
When you buy preloved clothing online from an individual, you will be limited to PayPal, bank transfer or cash on delivery – or even just one of these options. Transferring money to the bank account of an individual you don’t know can be daunting. Speaking from personal experience, it can be very easy to enter the wrong details into PayPal, resulting in the payment going to the wrong person!
The safest way to buy preloved clothing online is using a dedicated preloved clothing store that offers a range of payment options such as Paypal, Credit Card, or payment services that allow you to pay over several weeks. This way, you know your money is entirely traceable and secure.
Reloved Wardrobe offers a range of payment options made available through Shopify’s secure payment gateway, including Visa, Mastercard, Paypal, and Afterpay. Receipts will be emailed or sent via SMS to you once you have made payment.
5. Do they offer delivery?
When you buy preloved clothing online, in some instances, you may need to pick up the item, particularly if you are purchasing from an individual on gumtree or Facebook marketplace. This can be time consuming travelling across town to pick up your new purchase, and it can also be daunting knocking on someone’s door to collect the item. And it is even more frustrating when you turn up to collect the item, and no one is at home!
The safest way to receive your item is contactless delivery by a reputable courier or Australia Post. These services also supply a tracking code so that you know when your item will arrive. All you need to do is sit back and wait for it to be delivered to your doorstep!
Reloved Wardrobe offers contactless delivery using the delivery service Sendle and Australia Post. We select the best service depending on where you are located and supply a tracking code once your parcel is on its way to you.
